TEA Safety Policy

It’s always been our main concern that attendees to the TEAs should be in a safe environment to enjoy the party and the show with their friends, peers, and colleagues and, for the most part, over our 11 years of growth we’ve been able to provide that.  We welcome over 400 people to our main show from all over the world to help celebrate transgender erotica and we’ve accomplished that each year, with people leaving with good memories, new friendships and looking forward to the following year’s festivities.  No event of this size is without issues, and it’s unfortunate that a small element has caused us to look at ways of making the show safer and having to inform attendees what to look out for.   While we’ve always had security and staff floating in the crowds, this year we’re bringing in a number of changes to help us, and we’d like to take this opportunity to share them with you.

The last thing we want is to take an authoritarian approach – the TEA weekend is meant to be fun, and a time to celebrate.   The main thing is that you are all adults, and as adults, you should be responsible primarily for yourself, and then for the friends you are with.  We’ve removed some problematic individuals from this year’s show and this year we’re going to an over 21 policy (with a few exceptions for nominees who should contact kristel@grooby.com).

We’d like all attendees to be aware of the following;

  • We have a zero tolerance policy for any form of harassment, unwanted touching or abusive behavior.  You will be removed from the show or party if you exhibit this sort of behavior.
  • Drink testing kits will be available at the show to anyone who wants them.  You are recommended to get your own drinks and ensure nobody else has access to them.  If in doubt, please use the kit and if a positive result is shown contact a TEA staff member.
  • There will be floating ‘TEA Staff’ at the show wearing visible logo’d shirts – as well as lit-up wrist bands.   There will also be a TEA staff permanently at the right hand door (next to the bar) who will be clearly seen.  If you have any issues please see them immediately.
  • We will be posting a “secret word” prior to the show.  If you feel in danger, ill, harassed or have any issues, then using that word to a TEA staff member will have you escorted to a safe space, where we can assess the problem and inform security – or take necessary actions.
  • There will be non-uniformed ‘floater’ staff at the show, looking for potential problems and ensuring everyone is having a good time.
  • Look for staff – some will have a logo’d shirt, all will have a lit wrist band.  If you have any issues please get yourself to them.

We hope these measures will enable everyone to enjoy a fun, memorable, and safe evening.   Please be aware of how much alcohol you consume – those of you don’t eat before the show, and drink on an empty stomach please be careful.  Please be responsible for friends or those you see who may be in distress,  drunk or under an undue amount of unwarranted attention.  Please ensure if you go anywhere after the parties or show, you stay with friends and know where you are going.

All of us at The TEA Show are looking forward to celebrating the weekend with you.

A Word on Nominations, Judging and the TEAs.

Despite the Transgender Erotica Awards being as the name infers, an Award show, its main agenda has always been as a celebration of the adult trans industry and to draw a focus on our part of the industry and to honor the fabulous individuals who work in it.  We have a three day event, so that performers, industry and fans who travel from across the world, can enjoy an unparalleled experience of networking and entertainment.  As seriously as we take the nomination and the judging,  we aren’t exclusively about that and all should feel welcome and included.

The nomination process takes us over a month.  We’ve made some changes this year which we hope will enable us to be even more objective and help our judges make their decisions.    Nominations are fielded from fans and industry –  last month anyone had the ability to put forward names and titles for all categories,  we considered each of these nominations in turn which if eligible were put forward.  We then approached the companies shooting the majority of trans companies and asked for their opinions on performers who had worked for them, and scenes/DVDs they considered their strongest.

We’ve made the final nominations tighter than ever this year, and restricted the amount of scenes or DVDs each company can submit, so each companies nominations should be only their best work.   Splitting Best Scene into ‘Best Scene Girl/Boy’ and ‘Best Scene Girl/Girl’ allows the judges to be more objective by making like for like comparisons.    The nominations for the performers are even tighter with dozens of eligible individuals vying for only a few places.   We consider a performers body of work over the year,  the number of different companies they’ve worked for and the scope of work they’ve done.   When you look at the names on the Best Solo Model and Best Hardcore Performer, you can see how difficult it is to change out any of those names for someone else.    Best New Face, Best Non-US Performer also face those challenges while Ms.Unique because of the nature of that award may feature models who’ve done less work but hit a very specific niche, look or style.

All those nominated should be very proud of that – nearly all categories had dozens (if not 100’s) of nominees.   In any sort of nomination or award shows, there are always going to be complaints or opinions, on why someone isn’t included – and I can only answer that we do our best to look at all suggestions no matter if it comes from large companies, or individuals to get a fair temperature of who should be on those nomination lists.

So how is it judged?   We have a unique judging system – each year a selection of judges from the industry, media, and fans are tasked with choosing their favorite performers or scenes.   All judges are given access to the works, or a body of work for each performer to make that selection.  Judges identities are kept a secret (even from each other) until they’ve all submitted their choices so there can be no accusations of tampering.   This year we have company owners, DVD directors, models, producers, media and fans on the panel.   Each judge selects their top 3 choices in order, with different points given to each choice in that order.   The winner being the selection with the most points overall.

We consider this the fairest, most transparent and most objective way to select winners of any award shows, many of which only use a panel of judges.  Nobody from Grooby is judging the show this year (I have occasionally over the years).

A small glimpse into other changes that might take place this year,  as you may know, we have Domino Presley as the Mistress of Ceremonies and Natasha Dreams as our red carpet host (more announcements on the red carpet soon) and we’re hoping to reconfigure the red carpet to provide more room inside.   We’re focusing less on companies names – and more on the performers this year, which is where the onus should be,  although of course, the sponsors will be getting a massive amount of publicity.    We’ve added a ‘Best Self Producer’ category to include performers who make their own content for the clips sites or trade.  We also are working hard on getting our small Saturday convention, TEAcon working and with a new and exciting format to include some round tables on content production, legal and health issues that affect our industry.

We will be addressing more topics as the date grows closer,  including new safety measures for all performers (we are now only a 21+ event),  dress codes (no sweatpants – yes, I mean you!) and how to RSVP as a nominee or a model.

The TEAs are operated as a ‘not for profit’ – Grooby presents it and we rely on sponsors to cover the costs of the locations, programs, entertainment and all the small things that add up to make the show what it is.  We pick up the shortfall – as well as have our staff run the show, and everything needed to make it successful,  so if you are considering sponsoring please speak to Kristel to see what opportunities are available as we really do need you.

I hope this answers many questions.

Yours,
Steven Grooby

Domino Presley Announced as TEA’s Mistress of Ceremonies

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Transgender Erotica Awards proudly announces TEA winner Domino Presley as their 2019 Mistress of Ceremonies. The upcoming TEAs will be held at the historic Avalon in Hollywood on March 17, 2019.

“We’ve been so lucky to have some truly amazing hosts of the show,” said Steven Grooby.
“Jujubee and Madison really helped build our profile up and their professionalism and presence, I believe, have been a big part of the show. To keep things fresh, we’ve always wanted to rotate hosts. There was really only ever one choice and I was pretty confident it would be something that Domino would both enjoy and excel at doing. She knows so many of the girls personally – and having been in the industry now on both sides of the camera, she has a unique viewpoint.  Kristel and I are both looking forward to working with her up to the show.”

“I’ve never been more excited or nervous for something before,” added Domino Presley. “I’m still in shock that Steven asked me to host and I’m extremely grateful. I have a performance background and am far from shy on the microphone, so this should be a trip. If everything goes as planned I’m also bringing some major entertainment and the opening of the show will be epic. I still can’t believe Steven is crazy enough to let me host…with my sense of humor! You do NOT want to miss this year’s awards.”

Domino Presley is a TEA multi-award winner based in Los Angeles, CA. She first debuted with Grooby back 2010 and since then has worked for every major trans studio in the industry. In 2018, she made her directorial debut with Grooby with the release of her movie, Domino Presley’s House of Whores. Follow Domino Presley on Twitter at @DominoPresley.

The 2018 TEAs are a three-day event held in Hollywood, CA, kicking off with an official pre-party at the Bardot on March 15, a daytime fan convention on March 16, and ramping up to the awards ceremony on March 17 at the Avalon.

Pre-Nominations Open for 2019 TEAs

LOS ANGELES, CA – Pre-nominations are now open for the 2019 TEAs. Submissions are open to the industry and the public from now until October 23, 2018, at theTEAShow.com.

“It’s that time of the year again, and although we’re five months away from the 2019 TEAs, because of our unique judging process we’re ready to start getting pre-nominations between now and Oct 23,” said Steven Grooby. “Our process remains much the same,  we accept pre-nominations from industry and fans, then our panel pares it down to the nomination list that goes to the judges. This year we’re going to make the number of nominations much tighter. I appreciate and empathize that this will mean some may get missed out, but we need to keep to the integrity of the awards and I believe this will make it more competitive.”

The TEAs, officially known as the Transgender Erotica Awards, celebrates the accomplishments of the trans adult industry. The event, now in its eleventh year, started as an online competition and since then has grown into a popular three-day event welcoming guests from all over the world.

“We have one new category this year,  Best Trans Self-Producer,” added Grooby. “So many performers are making their own content for clips type sites or selling direct, we need to be inclusive of them into this show and I think this award will reflect a different type of content and a wider range of performers.”

The eligibility period for pre-nominations runs from November 15, 2017 – November 15, 2018. Additional information and the submission form can be accessed directly at http://www.theteashow.com/pre-nomination-voting

Grooby continued, “We’ve already got a number of sponsors committed and we look forward to welcoming more. The growth and success of our show have been, in large part, due to our sponsors. This has always been an inclusive community-driven event and not a money-making venture for us. We hope that other companies that work within the trans erotica industry, such as paysites, DVD companies, dating and cam sites, and clip stores will join us in celebrating the trans performers who are the backbone of our industry.”

Media and sponsorship inquiries can be directed to kristel@grooby.com. The three-day event will kick off with a pre-party on March 15th at the Bardot, a daytime fan convention on March 16th, and finish with the popular awards ceremony on March 17th at the Avalon in Hollywood. More details about the event and the pre-nomination process will be released in the months to come. Visit their official website at theTEAShow.com.
